Queen Anne 1720-1755

American Queen Anne furniture was generally made of walnut; however, different areas of the colonies also used maple and cherry. Characteristics of Queen Anne furniture are the distinctive cabriole leg with curving knee and feet, using a Dutch pad foot. Pointing the pad foot becomes a slipper foot, and elaboration of the pad foot becomes a tripod foot. The S-shaped scroll of the broken pediment and closed bonnets became traditional on highboys. The shell carving is used as the main motif on Queen Anne furniture, including top and bottom center drawers on highboys, bottom center drawers on lowboys, the knee of cabriole legs and the center of top of chair backs. Queen Anne didn’t end in 1755 but continued on through the 18th century with some features showing their influence in styles to come.
